The Ultimate Packing Guide: How to Pack Like a Pro
Packing is the part most people dread — but it doesn't have to be. Follow these proven packing tips to protect your belongings and make unpacking a breeze.
Packing is the part most people dread. But with the right approach, it doesn't have to be overwhelming.
Here's the packing guide our team at MoversLTD gives every customer before moving day.
Start With the Right Supplies
Don't skimp on packing materials. You'll need:
- Sturdy double-walled boxes in small, medium, and large sizes
- Packing tape (buy more than you think you need)
- Bubble wrap for fragile items
- Packing paper or newsprint
- Permanent markers for labelling
- Stretch wrap for furniture and bundles
Tip: liquor store boxes and banana boxes from grocery stores are free and surprisingly strong.
The Golden Rule: Heavy Items in Small Boxes
Books, tools, and canned goods go in small boxes. Pillows, bedding, and lampshades go in large boxes. A large box packed with books will break — and your back along with it.
Pack Room by Room
Never mix items from different rooms in the same box. It makes unpacking a nightmare. Finish one room completely before moving to the next, and label each box with both the room name and a brief contents list.
How to Pack Fragile Items
- Wrap each piece individually in packing paper or bubble wrap
- Line the bottom of the box with crumpled paper for cushioning
- Stand plates vertically like records — they're far less likely to break
- Fill any empty space so items can't shift during transit
- Mark the box FRAGILE on all sides
Clothes: The Easy Win
Leave clothes on hangers and wrap them in a garbage bag from the bottom up — instant garment bag. For folded clothes, leave them in dresser drawers if the drawers aren't too heavy to carry.
Disassemble Furniture Thoughtfully
Keep all screws, bolts, and small hardware in a labelled zip-lock bag taped directly to the furniture piece it belongs to. You'll save hours of searching on the other end.
Don't Leave Boxes Half-Empty
Half-empty boxes collapse under weight when stacked. Fill gaps with crumpled paper, towels, or soft items. A full, firm box is a safe box.
Pack a "Last Out, First In" Box
The last box loaded should be the first one off the truck. Include: a box cutter, toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, a few snacks, and basic cleaning supplies. You'll need these the moment you walk in.
Take Photos of Packed Items
Before sealing each box, snap a quick photo of the contents. If anything goes missing or gets damaged, you'll have documentation for insurance purposes.
What NOT to Pack
Movers cannot legally transport certain items. Keep these with you or dispose of them safely:
- Flammable liquids (paint, propane, gasoline)
- Perishable food
- Plants (some provinces restrict transport)
- Batteries in loose form
- Important documents and valuables
