10 Moving Tips That Will Save You Time, Money, and Stress

Moving doesn't have to be chaotic. These 10 practical tips from our experienced Surrey movers will help you pack smarter, plan better, and settle in faster.

Moving doesn't have to be chaotic. After helping hundreds of families across the Lower Mainland, our team at MoversLTD has seen what works β€” and what doesn't.

Here are 10 tips that will make your next move smoother than you ever thought possible.

1. Start Packing Earlier Than You Think

Most people underestimate how long packing takes. A 2-bedroom home can take 2–3 full days to pack properly. Start at least 3 weeks before your move date, beginning with items you rarely use β€” seasonal dΓ©cor, books, spare linens.

2. Declutter Before You Pack

There's no point paying to move things you don't need. Go room by room and ask: Have I used this in the last year? Donate, sell, or toss anything that doesn't make the cut. Less stuff = less cost = less unpacking.

3. Label Every Box β€” Top and Sides

Write the destination room AND a brief contents summary on every box. Label the sides, not just the top β€” boxes get stacked and you won't always see the top. Colour-coded tape per room is even better.

4. Pack a "First Night" Box

Pack one box with everything you'll need the first 24 hours: toiletries, a change of clothes, phone chargers, medications, snacks, coffee supplies, and basic kitchen items. This box rides with you β€” not in the truck.

5. Photograph Your Electronics Setup

Before unplugging your TV, router, or home office setup, take a photo of all the cable connections. When you're setting it all back up in your new place, you'll thank yourself.

6. Use Clothing to Wrap Fragile Items

Sweaters, towels, and t-shirts make excellent padding for dishes, glasses, and fragile dΓ©cor. It saves on bubble wrap and means fewer boxes overall.

7. Keep Important Documents With You

Passports, leases, insurance papers, and financial documents should never go in the moving truck. Keep them in a dedicated folder in your personal bag.

8. Notify the Right People Early

Don't leave address changes to the last minute. Notify your bank, CRA, employer, insurance providers, Canada Post, and any subscriptions at least 2 weeks before your move.

9. Measure Furniture Before Moving Day

Check that your large furniture will fit through doorways, hallways, and staircases in your new home. Discovering a couch won't fit after it's on the truck is a costly mistake.

10. Book Your Movers as Early as Possible

Peak moving season in BC runs May through September. The best moving companies fill up weeks β€” sometimes months β€” in advance. Lock in your date early to avoid scrambling.
